Nanny's Irises

Nanny, my grandmother on my mom's side, loved flowers and gardening. I spent many a hot summer day working along side her picking peas. She was the type to have a bushel of them picked, washed and blanched and ready for the freezer by lunchtime, or dinnertime, as we call it down south. Summers spent on the farm were very memorable - eating the wonderful fresh veggies and working in the dirt! There was no need for a sleep aid - I went to bed tired and sunburned and slept like a rock!

Nanny died in a house fire years ago, so we do not have many of her things to remember her by, but we have some of her flowers. My mom dug the bulbs for me and I planted them at the office last year. Well, to my surprise yesterday, I looked out the window and they had bloomed. I am so excited, they are so beautiful and are a special reminder of a wonderful grandmother who taught me so much! Hope you enjoy the pics...

These images soothe me so. I plan to look at them each time I have a crisis.

Those are just beautiful bearded irises!! I am so glad that you have them as a rememberance of your days with your grandmother. I remember that kind of tired!! My husband laughs, but I call it "good tired"!!

Those are gorgeous! I have my great-aunt's cannas that we transplanted - they haven't bloomed yet, but I am being patient. You've made me remember picking okra, ripping open the feedsacks for the cows, and hanging the laundry on the clothesline. :)

Cindy, I was so pleased to see that you had dropped by and left comment for me!! I hope you are well. I see to have gotten lost in blogland of late and don't manage to get around to everyone to say hi. I am loving your Iris pictures!! I showed them to my daughter who is studying botany at college and is really getting into flowers. Her room is filling up and looking like a green house. She has a particular love for orchids!! She loved your photos. What fabulous flowers. Reminds me of my grandmother's garden, she too loved being out there and working on her flowers, the peonies were her favorite!! We did the same thing, when the house was sold after she died, we dug up the peony bushes she so very much loved, and planted them among my sisters' homes. I could not take one for obvious reasons since i live over seas! :-) It was so nice to read about your childhood memories at your grandma's house, they so reflected my own good memories. thanks so much for sharing. And thanks for all your sweet comments on my posts! they make my day. take care, Debby
